About My Art
Amita Mridha is an artist who draws and paints diverse portraits and figures from Bengali culture and Hindu theology. She pulls inspiration from anime and manga, often using bright colors in their pieces to portray the vivacity of different cultures and lifestyles. The painting, “MARIGOLD” for example, depicts a South Asian woman in a black saree, surrounded by plant life, dismissing the typical notion of black as a gloomy, dark, or sad color. Black is glamorous, like celebrity limousines, but it’s also a reflective and grounding color, like bedrock under layers and layers of soil. Above the earth, marigolds grow, like people beyond grief.
They also enjoy integrating ideas from stories or quotes they come across. “KAALI” a painting that depicts the typically enraged, ash-skinned goddess in subdued purples and pinks. The painting draws inspiration from the quote, “A woman’s first blood doesn’t come from between her legs, but from biting her tongue,” by Midwestern author and domestic violence advocate Meggie C. Royer. In the image, Maa Kaali doesn’t bite her tongue (as she did when she stepped on her husband, Shiva), but her hair.
Amita also creates and sells custom work. They love to paint and draw unique subjects and settings. However, she will not accept commissions with excessive violence, sexual scenes or hate speech.
